not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more”.

Brutus uses the juxtaposition of multiple contrasting ideas to rationalize Caesar’s murder: “As Caesar loved me, I weep for him; as he was fortunate, I rejoice at it; as he was valiant, I honour him, but, as he was ambitious, I slew him.” Brutus claims Caesar’s ambition to be the reason of the conspirator’s act of murder.

The speeches given by both Brutus and Mark Antony in William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Julius Caesar are very persuasive to the audience that they are given to, but rhetorical devices were used in different ways in order for each to have an effect on the people of Rome.

In Brutus’s speech, he uses devices such as rhetorical question and antithesis to convince the Romans that he and the conpirators did a good deed by killing Caesar.

“Had you rather Caesar living and die all slaves, than that Caesar dead, to live all free men”; Brutus is implying if Caesar was not killed and instead was to go on and be crowned as king, the people would fundamentally be treated as slaves.

This accusation supports Brutus’ previous statement on line 23 stating: “…Both Brutus and Antony delivered powerful speeches using irony and rhetorical devices but one speech failed to deliver an essential connection with the crowd.Although Brutus persuades the plebeians, Mark Antony manipulates the crowd afterwards.” This was effective because the use of this line makes it seem as if Brutus was so noble that he would sacrifice something he loved dearly for the sake of Rome.Brutus’s speech was very effective in persuading the audience, because by the end every man that heard it was saying “Live! ” and saying that Brutus shall become a better Caesar.” Instead of quickly attacking Brutus, Antony repeats and contradicts Caesar’s good deeds with “Yet Brutus is an honorable man”; making a mockery of Brutus’ title of honor.Eventually the crowd catches onto Antony’s indirect argument: Caesar was not actually ambitious.” and “When the poor have wept, Caesar hath cried: Did this in Caesar seem ambitious? Mark Antony also uses apostrophe, or the turn from an audience to a specific person that is either absent or present, real or imaginary. Thou art fled to brutish beasts, and men have lost their reason” to emphesize that the Romans were foolish to listen to Brutus’s reasoning as to why the conspirators killed Caesar. The reaction to Mark Antony’s speech was more than that of Brutus’s.The conspirators depended on Marcus Brutus for one reason: to justify the murder of Julius Caesar. However after allowing Mark Antony to not only bring in the corpse of their beloved Caesar yet also speak after Brutus during the funeral, it would seem that Brutus’ role in the murder was pointless.
