For independent researchers, it depends on the style standard of the research paper publishers. Bear with me and let’s take a look at some sample academic papers from different publishers.

From my experience, most of the academic papers are worse, except papers from Elsevier. The following is the quotation of the first paragraph from A Writing Handbook.

Rule: In the upper left corner of the first page of your document, type your name, the date, the course number and section (or topic), and the version of the paper (such as Paper 1 Second Draft), each on a separate line.

Be sure to change the date and paper version when you submit revisions and final versions.

It’s quite obvious to make a decision between these two papers about which one possess better typography.

The first paper is from Elsevier and the second paper is from IEEE.
